Categories and tags organize your places and become filters on the map. Both live on the **Categories and tags** screen.

## Categories: what a place is

A category says what a place is: *Store*, *Reseller*, *Clinic*, *Outlet*. Every place has exactly one. On the map, categories become a filter.

Create at least one category before adding places. A category in use by places can't be deleted; move the places first.

## Tags: something about a place

A tag is a label you can put on places of any category: *Pickup*, *New store*, *Black Friday*. A place can have many tags. Use **New tag** and fill in:

- **Name** and an optional **description**.
- **Background and text colors** for the label on the map.
- **Icon** (optional): a square PNG, JPG or WebP, at least 64×64 pixels and up to 1 MB.
- **Start and end dates** (optional). Outside them, the tag doesn't appear in the store. Without dates, it is always active.
- **Categories** it applies to. Leave all unchecked for every category. Restricting a tag removes it from places of other categories.
- **Promotion link** (Essential). The label becomes a link on the map and on the product page.

## Apply a tag to places

- **On one place:** open it on **Places** and pick its tags.
- **On many places from the list:** select them and use **Apply tag** in the bar that appears.
- **On many places from a file:** on **Import and export**, under **Apply a tag to many places**, choose the tag and whether to add or remove it, and send a CSV with an `external_id` column. Places without an external code can't be reached this way, and codes not found appear under **See errors** without stopping the others.

## A promotion, start to finish

1. Create the tag *Black Friday* with your colors, an end date and the link to the promotion page.
2. Apply it to the participating places with a list of their external codes.
3. Done. The label appears on the map and on the product page while the dates last, and disappears by itself at the end.
